The short answer: under current federal rules (the Air Carrier Access Act), most airlines no longer treat emotional support animals as service animals. A trained psychiatric service dog is handled differently from an ESA when you fly.

Emotional support animals are usually treated as pets and subject to the airline’s pet policy, including fees and carrier rules.
